Dr. Zeng is a distinguished scientist with the Imaging Unit, Integrative Oncology Department, British Columbia Cancer Agency and a professor of Dermatology, Pathology, and Physics at the University of British Columbia. For over 30 years, Dr. Zeng’s research has been focused on the optical properties of biological tissues and light-tissue interaction, as well as their applications in medical diagnosis and therapy. He has published over 80 refereed journal papers, 1 book, 18 book chapters, and has 28 granted patents. Three medical devices derived from these patents, have passed regulatory approvals, and are currently in clinical uses around the world. The latest device, Verisante Aura™ using Raman spectroscopy for non-invasive skin cancer detection, was awarded the Prism Award in the Life Sciences and Biophotonics category in February, 2013 by SPIE, the International Society for Optics and Photonics. He was co-founder for two spring-off companies from BCCA and has collaborated and consulted for a couple of other companies working on optical diagnostic devices. He collaborates broadly nationally and internationally including with the Dalhousie University group, Prof. Kevin Hewitt and Prof. Ian Alwayn, for liver fat detection, the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Prof. Stephen Sonis, for oral cancer detection, and the Fujian Normal University, China Prof. Rong Chen for nasopharyngeal cancer detection.
